Being an English ambassador gave this student more access to his school’s NET who made him more aware of the language. He says NETs focus on communication and subject teachers more on areas such as grammar. He has read TIME and Reader’s Digest.

Preparing for IELTS exposed this Malaysian Civil Engineering major to academic writing and argumentative essays. He has read many news magazines and the dictionary. He says he uses English more in Hong Kong but the standard is not as high as Malaysia.

Independent learning and logical thinking skills are key to excelling in IELTS according to this Social Policy major. As a postgraduate student in Hong Kong, she has used English more. She reads course material for writing papers.

A pre-university course in London enabled this Global China Studies major to interact with classmates from different countries. She likes Twilight because the plot is romantic and uses the dictionary and Wikipedia for learning.

Chatting with native speakers enabled this student to improve his speaking skills. Grammar books were useful for getting good exam results. He read Reader’s Digest and used a Kindle. He enjoys watching the comedian Michael Mclntyre.

To prepare for GRE and IELTS, this Chemistry major read books and tried to communicate with foreigners. She read Reader’s Digest and New Concept English.

Being on a high school debating team improved this Business major’s communication skills. She likes reading magazines for girls like Seventeen and also Reader’s Digest.

Tutorials complemented this Engineering major’s DSE preparation by expanding her vocabulary and sharpening her grammar. Knowledge gained from Reader’s Digest is not available in class.

An ESL class in primary school taught this Actuarial Science major grammar and writing, idioms and poetry. She was eager to read children’s book series. Teachers encouraged her to read newspapers and magazines.
