Repeatedly reading newspapers and doing past papers in class was boring and not useful for this Science major. Reading the South China Morning Post and sharing the news and vocabulary with her friends improved her language skills.

During an English camp in secondary school, this Science major learnt multiple drama techniques and prop names. Reading stories to kindergarten children was a win-win situation as she taught them English and also benefited from it.

An English teacher stuck newspaper and magazine articles all around the classroom for this Chemistry major to read. She enjoyed reading books with primary school students through her secondary school’s partnership reading programme.

Writing a new script based on Othello was one of the activities this English major did in literature class. Reading Roald Dahl’s The BFG to her mother boosted her confidence in speaking.

A service camp in China gave this Nursing major a chance to teach English. He liked reading the Magic Tree House series when he was young.

A university course taught this Accounting and Finance major presentation and academic writing skills. The library gave her The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas to read and she did a sharing with other students.

Talking to foreigners motivated this Sociology major to work on her spoken English and daily use of the language. She enjoyed reading the Harry Potter series when she was in secondary school.

Sharing a floor with exchange students meant this Business major had to to interact using English. She finds the course materials in university challenging as the textbooks in the Mainland were all in Chinese.

Chatting with his roommates from England and Indonesia improved this Economics major’s communication skills. He learnt many scientific terms from a suggested book titled In Dialogue with Science.

Writing her first academic essay meant this Nursing major had to do online research and read journals. As a part-time tutor, she read storybooks to help her students prepare for school examinations.

A foreign friend helped this Design major improve his English and pass the IELTS. Translating an article for a classmate was a difficult task for him.

A summer programme in New Zealand gave this Construction Management major an opportunity to stay with host family and meet people from different countries. She mostly reads journals for her studies. Her favourite novel is Harry Potter.

Playing games and speaking with foreigners in a summer camp helped improve this Human Resource Management major’s English. She watched movie adaptations of The Book Thief and a story from John Green. Both of which were recommended by a friend.

Interacting with foreign friends who he met online, in class, and on sports teams is an alternative for this Computer Science major to learn the language. It also made him realise he shouldn’t be intimidated when being approached by foreigners. He read Everything’s Eventual by Stephen King.

After being drilled in English by her mother at home, this Linguistics major did well in the subject. She read Enid Blyton under the influence of her friends. The Harry Potter series and books from Sidney Sheldon are her favourites.

English learning started in kindergarten for this Business Administration major. She finds the experience more interesting than learning Mandarin, her first language. A friend recommended Fifty Shades of Grey and the Fault in Our Stars to her.

A cultural festival enabled this Humanities major to interact with foreigners and learn more about their culture. He read Little Red Riding Hood to some children during a community service.
